If you hit the earth with an egg, what will happen? Is it a blow to the stone or something else? On the afternoon of 16th May, 2022, shouts came from the laboratory building. Why was the discussion so heated? It turned out that one of a series of activities, namely, ‘Egg Hits the Earth’ competition was being held to celebrate the school anniversay.
To start with, this competition started in the eighth grade. The players of each class meticulously organized the competition, which was actively attended by a great many students who loved handwork and scientific research and observed by all the teachers and students.
At the beginning of the activity, each class submitted two entries designed by themselves, after which each contestant put on the device and dropped an ordinary raw egg from a high place (the fourth floor of the experimental building) onto the concrete floor in order. The lighter the whole piece, the more accurate the landing, thus the higher the score, without breaking the shell. In the competition, the participants should give full play to the spirit of innovation in unique ways on the one hand, and the competition environment, weather and other factors should be fully considered on the other hand.
At the scene of the competition, the students put their heads together to ‘arm’ the eggs in various ways. For example, parachutes, foam and balloons exerted their cushioning effects to slow the egg's fall; Besides, some students designed tripods for eggs to hang in. Additionally, some students even used express boxes, cotton bags...It can be said that the eight immortals have their powers cross the sea. Three! Two! One!!! Egg launch! The students who threw eggs with great care were afraid that the eggs would not fall within the prescribed range; What’s more, the moment the device was released, the students watching downstairs held their breath, waiting for the egg to ‘hit the ground’. Cheers and regrets came and went. Therefore, the summer breeze brought youth to every corner of Anqing Foreign Language School.
In a nutshell, in this ‘Egg hits the Earth’ competition, students applied the scientific knowledge they had learned to solve practical problems, and in the process of analyzing and solving problems, they developed innovative ability, strengthened the sense of community, and truly practiced the meaning of ‘exploring the beauty of scientific research, feeling the beauty of scientific laws, and experiencing the joy of creating science and technology’. There were 4 first prizes, 8 second prizes and 14 third prizes in this competition.
